Lens story

I don't even remember when I got this lens anymore. It's been sitting in a box or on a shelf for the longest time.

Why haven't I used it? Two metal bars are missing from the backside. Those bars hold the focus helicoid in when you focus. Without them, the lens comes apart while in use. I am a HUGE fan of reassembling helicoids that have more than one entry point, don't get me wrong, but it just didn't seem like the right time.

When I got the Jupiter-37, I noticed the same bars (please tell me if there's a proper term), and after trying it out, it turns out they fit (with some minor tightness).

Handling

Spontaneous disassembly aside, this lens handles well. It's a preset aperture, which isn't a big deal for me. Construction is solid and focus is smooth.

It's a bit on the heavier side, but then again, lenses of that age often are.

Optical performance

I'm hesitant to use the phrase "stopped down" when talking about this lens, as f4 is already close enough.

I was pleased with sharpness, contrast, and color.

The lens was surprisingly flare-resistant, considering I took it out on treks in the snow and during the day.

It's a good performer, which is not surprising, considering it's a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 135mm clone and uses the same optical formula.

Final thoughts

I'd say go for this one if you can find it at a reasonable price. Do check that it's mechanically sound: smooth focus, non-oiled aperture blades, the whole deal.
