Frequently asked questions

How are lenses reviewed?

You won’t find charts or bench tests. I take the lens out and write down the time I spent with it: how I found it, how it handles, what the pictures look like, and whether I would carry it again.

Which camera are the reviews taken on?

Some of the older reviews are taken on the Sony a7. Since then I've switched to my dream camera - The Nikon Zf. I love the styling and feel of it!

Which is your favorite lens and/or camera?

That really depends on what I want to use it for. A really hard choice, but I'd say: For a digital camera I love my Nikon Zf. For a film camera, I'd go with my Leica IIf. A normal 50mm - The Zeiss Sonnar 5cm 1.5 still has a very special place in my heart. If I had to pick a wideangle, I'd go for a Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35mm 2.4.

Can I suggest a lens?

Sure, drop me an email, but keep in mind, I have a lot of unreviewed gear. It's not a guarantee I'd find it, or have the spare money to get it.

Are the photographs edited, or straight from the camera?

All photographs are edited using Adobe Lightroom. In my opinion, editing has been part of photography since it was invented. Film development has a ton of ways to affect contrast, grain size and push and pull iso. When you get to darkroom printing, you can use filters, dodge and burn and crop freely. The goal is to get a photo the way you envision in.

Do you still own the lenses you review?

I've kept a few lens + camera combos, for when I feel the urge to shoot film. I've tried to cover all my bases with different focal lengths. I have quite a few lenses that are awaiting review. I usually sell lenses I've used and get new ones I'm interested in.

Donate to a random charity of choice, buy a coffee (or tea, or water, or beer) for a friend. The world can use all of the kindness it can get.
